Sandra Burlizzi is a multifaceted professional, capable of turning personal and cultural challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation. Originally from Brindisi, she has built a career spanning marketing, communication, and the founding of Re_Creation Group, a movement dedicated to expatriate women and their creative expression. Her story is marked by resilience, empathy, and determination, qualities that have led her to build inclusive and supportive communities in international contexts, particularly in the United Arab Emirates. With an authentic and inspired approach, Sandra places the human being at the center, transforming art, writing, and creativity into tools of rebirth and connection. Her mission, steeped in deep values, recalls the spirit of figures such as Maria Montessori, making her an authoritative and innovative voice in the field of support and female empowerment.

Sandra, can you tell us something about yourself?

"With pleasure. Brindisi was the first city I loved, where I keep my dearest memories. It marked the first twenty-three years of my life and taught me to turn challenges into opportunities. Growing up in a military and male-dominated family environment, I had to face the uncertainties and limitations that came with it. My childhood and adolescence were shaped by prejudices and stereotypes, by emotional and physical blockages… I was a rebel," says Sandra, her gaze revealing the strength of someone who has fought to assert herself in a world that often puts up barriers to women.

"For love, I moved to Northern Italy, embarking on a journey to an area that at the time was intolerant towards Southerners. When I arrived, it was not easy. The distrust was palpable, but at the same time I found within myself the strength to stand out," she explains. With determination and persistence, supported by years of work in various commercial sectors and specific training courses, she specialized in marketing and communication. She managed to stand out, earning the respect and appreciation of those who had her as a colleague or collaborator. "I was able to build a network of professional relationships that allowed me to grow and overcome discrimination. It was a formative experience," she says proudly. "These experiences taught me the importance of change and how difficulties can turn into springboards."

Today, Sandra is an established professional and a true example of resilience and innovation, proving that challenges, when faced with courage and determination, can open doors to new opportunities. Her story is not only one of personal success, but a beacon for all women who, like her, want to break the chains of tradition to build a better future.

When did your personal transformation journey truly begin?

"I believe my personal transformation began in childhood, within my family. Even as a little girl, I realized that my way of thinking was very different from that of the other members of my family. I gradually developed my own beliefs, going through this process with difficulty, sometimes taking refuge in silences that, for me, were constructive, but incomprehensible to others. I have always maintained that speaking to those who cannot listen is a meaningless exercise.

Separating from my family of origin felt like a first form of inner death. In fact, I think I developed self-protection mechanisms from a young age—a modus operandi that has stayed with me throughout life. I relied heavily on myself and my abilities, without tangible support. Marriage or building a new family does not always bring true mutual understanding; often it simply means sharing the road with someone else.

Once I was able to safeguard my soul, I could face the rest of life with renewed awareness. Writing gave me the opportunity to examine and give structure to my transformations. Through writing, I analyzed my psychological growth, creating frameworks that allowed me to better understand behaviors I had adopted in response to difficult experiences. This study opened me to a deeper understanding of others and allowed me to establish more authentic connections with the world, helping to reduce my fears.

Even moving abroad with my family never scared me; on the contrary, it aroused my curiosity and provided new material to explore. My experience in the United Arab Emirates, in a radically different cultural context, allowed me to rediscover aspects of myself I had neglected, especially my creative side. I began to better understand the emotional impact that expat life can have on people—an awareness that sparked a new wave of personal growth in me. This is how the idea of creating a support group for expat women was born. The group is called Re_Creation."

What inspired you to create Re_Creation Group?

"Re_Creation was born from a real need. I saw many expatriate women feeling isolated, disoriented, and disconnected from any sense of belonging. I created the group as a safe and welcoming space where women could share their experiences, express themselves creatively, and above all, feel seen and supported.

In a global world where migration is commonplace, expatriate women often face a complex and lonely reality. From this observation, Re_Creation Group was born—an initiative designed to respond to a deep need for belonging and connection. The group is more than just a meeting place. I created it as a space where women could not only share experiences, but also express themselves creatively.

In an environment where one feels free to express emotions and talents, every member can find comfort and inspiration. Feeling noticed and supported is essential. Re_Creation Group aims to be a safe harbor, a place where each woman’s story can be heard and celebrated. This project is not only an opportunity for personal growth, but also a social experiment that aims to unite women through art, creativity, and sharing. In an age where human connection is often sidelined—in this era of virtual reality that I personally detest—Re_Creation stands as a beacon of hope, an invitation to build an inclusive and supportive community among women who, despite coming from different backgrounds, share the desire to feel part of something bigger."

How would you describe Re_Creation’s impact so far?

"Re_Creation Group has had a significant impact that goes far beyond numbers," says Sandra with a smile reflecting her passion for the project.

"In the six years since its founding, the group has organized over 130 cultural and creative events, a constant effort to create spaces for sharing and growth for expatriate women. These events range from art workshops to cultural-language exchange meetings, from networking sessions to themed parties, all aimed at fostering deep connections among participants and rethinking the concept of belonging.

But what really matters is the transformation I’ve seen in participants. Women who enter the group feeling disoriented and overwhelmed by the daily challenges of life in a foreign country, by the end of the journey find a renewed sense of connection, becoming empowered and motivated. Many rediscovered forgotten passions, unlocking creativity and talent that had been pushed aside during the adaptation process. We’ve seen women reinterpret their narratives through painting or music, and even launch entrepreneurial ventures thanks to the group’s encouragement and their revived skills.

The participants’ identities find new roots, enriched by shared experiences and the beauty of diversity. Re_Creation Group has proven to be a place not only of growth, but of rebirth. Many women have said the group gave them a sense of community—a supportive family in a new social environment. The transformation is tangible. Every event is not just a learning opportunity, but a step toward building a stronger, more cohesive identity."

You’ve been active for six years, so you also had to face COVID. How did that period affect you, and how did Re_Creation adapt?

It was difficult. Living abroad with family far away in our countries of origin, or with children studying elsewhere, and not being able to take a plane to see them, was a real challenge. And yet, we never stopped.

During quarantine and isolation, we met on Zoom and continued our activities—languages, yoga, Pilates, and arts & crafts. When it became possible to meet in person again, we always respected distancing rules, sometimes meeting in small groups.

In Abu Dhabi, we had an app that was updated directly by the hospital once test results were received. This QR code, valid for 15 days, was required to access all public places: supermarkets, meeting spaces, places of worship, parks. I must say the UAE organized this very well, making things easier for us.

What values guide your work?

Resilience – I have faced obstacles and unhealthy attempts to undermine personal projects, but I have always believed in my entrepreneurial abilities.

Empathy – Active listening. I understand the feeling of discomfort and loneliness (because I have experienced it myself) and I make sure others feel the warmth that was missing for me.

Creativity – Music, art, and writing have been the tools that helped me heal. Now I offer them to others.

Authentic leadership – I do not lead with authority, but with care. I believe in building together, not alone.

What do you hope expatriate women will take away from Re_Creation?

"Re_Creation is more than a group; it’s the starting point for a new chapter. I deeply wish that every participant, once she leaves, takes with her not only memories, but a true treasure. The first gift to cherish is the sense of welcome and hospitality that permeated every event. It has been a warm embrace—a feeling of belonging to a community that welcomes without reservation.

In a sometimes cold and distant world, this human warmth is a precious refuge. This experience goes beyond hospitality: it is infused with a spirit of sisterhood and equality. In a context where cultural differences intertwine, participants have learned that even the smallest interactions can be a source of inspiration and growth. We have faced challenges together, laughed, cried, and built bonds that defy geographical barriers.

The harmony within our projects is another gift I hope each woman can take with her. We have worked together, united by a common goal, creating something unique that reflects everyone’s talent and commitment. In this climate, women have discovered they are capable of wonders, developing a sense of community that has turned into a collective enterprise, where each has been able to shine.

Shared time is a precious asset. Every minute spent together is a gift not only for the present, but for building memories that will last. The meetings, the laughter, and even the tears have created a deep bond—a humanity that has enriched the journey of each participant. Re_Creation is more than a group; it is the starting point for a new chapter. I hope each woman returns to her life bringing not only the experiences and skills acquired, but also a renewed vision of herself, revitalized courage, and the awareness that together, any challenge can be faced."

What I want most in the world is "Peace among Peoples," she adds with a touch of sadness.

In Sandra Burlizzi’s work echoes the legacy of Maria Montessori

Sandra’s mission recalls the spirit of Maria Montessori. Though they lived in different eras and worked in different fields, both challenged social conventions and placed human connection at the center of their work.

Like Montessori, Sandra:

• Transformed her personal suffering into social innovation

• Focused on nurturing potential through empathy and creative tools

• Built a lasting model for empowerment, autonomy, and community

• Believed that change begins with listening, healing, and educating the heart

Sandra Burlizzi is, in many ways, the Montessori of the expat world—a woman who inspires and reminds us that transformation is possible when we create spaces where people truly feel at home.
